Yama ni wa yama no urei ari
Umi ni wa umi no kanashimi ya
Mashite kokoro no hanazono ni
Sakishi azami no hana naraba

The most massive mountains are / never free from worry.
The vastest sea is neither / free from sadness
Still more in the flower gardens / of human minds,
The thistle flowers opened there / must suffer from a hard time.

Takane no yuri no sore yori mo
Himetaru yume wo hitosuji ni
Kurenai moyuru sono sugata
Azami ni fukaki waga omoi

The lilies in the high mountains / are surely precious.
Still more precious secret image, / I’ve been keeping in my mind.
The beautiful feature burning / in such charming crimson,
That’s the dearest thistle flower / that I’ve been longing for.

Itsoshiki hana yo na(nji) wa azami
Kokoro no hana yo na(nji) wa azami
Sadame no michi ni hate naku mo
Kaore yo semete waga mune ni

Oh, such a dearest flower, / you are a thistle flower !
The only flower in my heart, / you are a thistle flower !
Even though we mayn’t encounter / in our lives each other,
I wish I could realize your perfume / in my ever-waiting bosom.
